The camp fire dying when you do the summoning event means that your spirit affinity isn't high enough.
Feed the flames at least 2 times and and choose to approach the bushes/check it out when the option comes up.
Also if you want the Femboy spirit later you'll have to be on Karna's path and choose essence of self. Summoning a spirit with his essence is not advisable.
