Gameplay Instructions
My entry for the "Here We Go Again" theme, PaperManny is an homage throwback to NES classic PaperBoy.
This tiny hamlet lost the Internet. Now they have to rely on our Newspapers again. Deliver to as many houses as you can and meet back at the newsvan at the end of the block. Our readers are counting on you! Watch out for the local wildlife, I hear the birds didn't take losing the internet very well.

WASD control, Throw newspapers with Q and E (Left and Right respectively), and Jump with spacebar. Control camera perspective with the mouse.

Third and First person gameplay modes, with C to toggle between modes.

Note: In the Main Menu/settings, Left Mouse Button will go Back/Return to previous screen.

Which Engine version did you use to create your entry?
5.6.1

What platform is your game built for?

Windows

Which Theme did you created your game based on?

Looks like I missed it in the list above, I also used Stage Zero – Shader Pre-Compile Plugin v2.3 by 71 Studios for Games Development

I never played the original Paperboy game, but this one definitely sold me on the idea. It could be a great game if a solid remake was made. I really liked the visuals and the variety of graphical settings you included.

I did run into some technical issues though. It seemed like there was a problem with shader compilation or loading, because when the loading finished, the game froze for me. After restarting, the road did not load in at all. On the third try, everything finally worked.

The game also felt pretty difficult. I wish the difficulty settings actually worked because I got knocked down so many times by birds, cars, or sometimes for no clear reason. Still, I would love to play a polished version of this for hours and try to chase a high score. Awesome revisit to a classic concept.

Thanks for the compliments and feedback!

I'm sorry about the technical issues, it's definitely not in the state I want it to be in. I'm not sure where the freezing issue came in, but I ended up encountering it too, though only through the Itch App version after submission. I tested the packaged copy a few times,  making multiple copies into different folders it after finishing a fresh rebuild of the package and before opening it in order to mimic fresh starts of the game in each folder copy, and all seemed working very well locally with each version.

I uploaded the build through Butler and submitted the project. I then installed it myself through the Itch App, and the game froze up and ultimately crashed the first time trying to open it. In fact, It wouldn't even let me open the app-installed game again even after restarting my computer multiple times. I ultimately had to uninstall and reinstall the game again in order to launch it from the app after that.

I was going to try to troubleshoot that a bit more, but then when I was trying to trim down the gameplay clips I recorded for the gameplay video, DaVinci Resolve decided it didn't want to play any audio while putting it all together. The rendered out version kept the sound, but the sound refused to play in the timeline while editing. I spent way too long troubleshooting that and ultimately had to give up and just accept it, and cut all the clips together and balance the sound visually reading the levels and adding audio fades to blend between clips somewhat. If not for that last snafu i may have been able to polish the build a bit more with the time left. (Naturally i opened DR again a couple days later out of curiosity and of course audio worked fine then..)

On the road failing to load, if what you're saying is just the road didn't load in but rest of the world did, that's really surprising because the road + landscape (static meshes) + houses are all merged as a single HISM for performance.  I would think that would make it an all-or-nothing type deal.. but I am new to HISMs, so definitely something I'll look into more in depth.

I agree on the difficulty, I have to tune it better and tie it into the the difficulty adjustment settings. I didn't have time to tune it too much more for the jam, I admittedly bit off more than I could finish and that made the final product a bit rough, again sorry about that!

I do intend to revisit everything after the winners are announced. I don't want to touch the project in the meantime in case Epic needs see it for any reason. I will say though, on that note though, I originally I had 3x as many birds, and their attack timers were much more aggressive.  I also dampened the bike crash sensitivity a bunch from where i originally had it. It was pretty insane, wont lie lol.

Wow, thank you for your detailed reply!

Yeah, I’ve definitely had my fair share of illogical problems with different apps too. It never ends and never ceases to surprise me.

I actually downloaded the game directly from the website, not through the Itch app.

The issue I ran into was that the road and most of the landscape were invisible. I could still drive around and see the cars and houses, but the road itself wasn’t visible, and I could see everything underneath the map.

No worries at all about the polish. I’ve played some of the submissions from previous years, and even a few of the unplayable ones still made it to the sizzle video on YouTube. You’ve created a great and unique game.

So it was a Soulsborne at first. I’m happy you made it easier.

Thanks for the follow up - good to know that when the environment was mostly invisible that collision was still working. That reinforces a shader/material issue to look into because actual meshes remained. It's loading, just not visible. And again, thank you for the compliments!

No problem at all! Glad that helps narrow it down. it was a fun game.

I liked the visuals and the randomness of the mailboxes! I know the time was short, but maybe adding elements that allow players to earn more points, like some ramps, in the future versions.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks! I was hoping people would notice the mailboxes! And yep, I absolutely ran out of time. Had a lot more plans that I had to cut even with the extension. On the points, I had added the mini skate park in there as an homage to the challenge course at the end of original PaperBoy levels, and my goal was to put in a separate points system for doing tricks/jumps, but ran out of time trying to balance the jump heights/air time, and had to kick that can back down the road. Also wanted to tie that into points for smacking the birds before they hit you.

After the judging is done and the projects open back up I plan to revisit and expand it quite a bit. I've already got a huge list of just fixes alone for what's in there now, on top of the features i couldn't get to. Though I'll probably have to come up with a new main character and game name, I'm not sure Epic would want me releasing an actual full game using Manny..
