The problem is that the struggle button never appeared with the orange text (which indicated that it was interactive). I tried skipping the text, waited without even clicking on the screen hoping the struggle would appear, and even tried using the auto-clicker where it should have appeared. I don't know if it was a bug in my game, but I only managed to get past that part after using an old save file and playing through that part again. Then I finally managed to get past that part.
