The wheat cornels are a reference to the myth that vampires have to count rice, cornels and other stuff. That's why some people put them in front of their houses so when a vampire wants to enter their house, they can escape in the time the vampire counts the cornels. Or they buried people with them, so that they are too busy counting to get out of their graves :D
