The flashbacks threw me off at first too, but I'm pretty sure all of them are memories, triggered when the mc is investigating. There's a line before you start investigating about remembering more, but I think something even clearer would be helpful. The non-linear format is interesting and works well here. I only wish I had gotten the hint sooner that's what was going on. :)
