It’s an interesting game based on Balatro and deck building.
The good:
- It’s free.
- I like the twist where instead of playing cards on their own, they are placed on a grid which forms a bit more strategy.
- The difficulties are based on characters.
- The focus is based on upgrading your already existing cards rather than gambling to get better ones.
- Haven’t found any bugs as of writing this.
- There’s audio which makes the game more lively.
- There’s good replayability.
All of those make it different and a unique experience, but its the bad that kind of drag the game down (at least for me).
The bad:
- The lack of actual original art. I understand art may be difficulty at times, but most of the assets are by AI. There is also no tag that mentions that this game contains AI art and audio. I, as an artist, personally do not support AI art. I can see how it might be helpful for game development, but for a good game, there should be very little amounts to none or at least an obvious disclaimer.
- The lack of story. Writing is a profession on its own and with a reason. However, there is very, very little story telling in this game. This game feels like it could be so much more, but there isn’t much to go off. Especially considering the fact that the opponents are based on characters. Feels sort of empty.
- The tutorial is kind of bare and makes it a little bit confusing at the start. However, you do get the hang of it pretty fast. I would suggest making the tutorial interactive to remove that bit of confusion. I would also suggest explaining some of the buttons too.
- Inconsistencies. The background of some of the characters and screens make no sense. They just feel like they are put there just so there is something - not to immerse.
- A settings menu would be nice. More specifically an audio adjuster.
There are a couple other things I could point out such as the UI and missing tags, but I think the ones that I have outlined are more important and what sets the game back mostly.
Overall, I liked the twist of the game but the lack of lore and original work (referring to the art), makes it kind of egh. If it’s your first game, it’s not a bad start.
