It works now! I did have to go to the security menu to force open it (mac couldn't verify that the application was safe).
Amazing story, I (much like most of the other commenters) couldnt put it down and read it in one sitting. The imagery was visceral and the ending brought tears to my eyes with how hopeless and sweet and accepting it was.
