I found several mirrors scattered throughout the game, and at the end of the game, it seemed like there was another, different mirror. Do these mirrors have a function, or would I have to finish the game again without dying for the mirrors to serve their purpose, according to the message from the last mirror when I attack it?

Regarding the mirrors, you can use the Candle to remove their chains. The rust on the other mirrors can only be scrapped off from the inside.
If you wish to see more of what the game has to offer, consider checking the challenges menu! With enough of them turned on, the story would progress upon starting a new game.
We'd recommend using a different save file for furthering the game, though. Challenge unlocks, achievements and something extra is kept between save files.
There are also 2 secret areas you may have missed... Or rather, passed right by them when you were just getting started, or didn't have enough time to fully get through It. Just be careful, as each of those will test your speed and mastery of the game's mechanics in their own way.
