So from what I understand, the purple bar under the life bar is a kind of resistance.
The lower it is, the more enemies will hit you before grabbing you, But the higher the purple bar, the less enemies will hit you before grabbing you.
And when the purple bar is fully filled, enemies will grab you without hitting you.
