It took a me a while to realise, but I think the wave doesn't really get bigger, it's that everything else gets smaller. Is there more than 1 level? I couldn't see any indication of progress to tell me what I needed to do to get onto the next level, and eventually I just got so big (or rather the level got so small!) that I couldn't avoid the enemies any more.
