I'm 6 years late, but gotta give my 2 cents here.
This feels like some sort of messed up syndrome by parents. A lot of us remember back then of wanting to play Doom because it was scary and edgy, not because it was fluffy and cute. The latter would actually push our younger self away.
It really feels like some sort of guilty, misguided projection.
