Hey everyone. This is my GMTK 2025 submission, Unnatural Shopkeeper! Here's a basic overview of the gameplay:

  • At daytime: You look around the streets for items, search through garbage bins and baskets that drop items. But avoid being suspicious, cause if the suspicion bar is too high, you lose. Searching through bins and baskets, running (Shift), etc. raise suspicion, you can lower suspicion by hiding in boxes and walking slowly (Ctrl). You can also upgrade your store during this time.
  • At nighttime: You get insta-teleported to your store, the movement changes from platformer to 8-direction. You have to place your items in the counters. Go up to a counter, press E, an inventory will pop up and you select what to put in the counter. Once you have at least one item in stock, you can open your store, costumers will come by and buy items. You can also tweak the price of the items, cheaper items raise suspicion, but are more likely to be bought, more expensive items aren't suspicious, but are less likely to be bought. You have to make sure there's always stuff on sale or else new costumers won't come by.

And loop repeats. There's a few other things like a store where you can buy items to resell, etc., but that's the main gameplay. Also, a few side tangents:

  • Items might take long to pick up, sorry.
  • The day-night cycle is pretty slow, mostly cause of bad balancing in my part, but also so you can explore the city entirely.
  • Suspicion raises faster when police cars are nearby.
  • There's no limit to upgrades, though some of them are glitchy and kind of unusable, sorry!!
