I think the instructions for the timing of the controls are a bit vague, I couldn't figure out the timing and the bee kept getting me :(

i just tested some friends and you are indeed correct, that we should have explained that feature.
In order to accelerate, you have to hold down d, as long as the crank is on the right and a as long, as the crank is on the left. This should directly imitate cycling and will make you accelerate.
