I'm glad you enjoyed the way we approached the theme, that was actually something I was a bit worried about.
To answer your question: yes, it was a deliberate choice on our part to make the game challenging, where the player needs several attempts to understand how the boss works before being able to defeat it.
Our game includes 6 bosses, and we wanted to ensure good game length and replayability, while also offering a real challenge to reach and face all the bosse!
