To answer your question, diasporas tend to be quite nationalistic. This is certainly the case in the US. Irish American communities overwhelmingly supported Irish nationalists. America's Italian community backed Italian unification (Garibaldi worked in a candle factory on Staten Island for a while). The Ukrainians we have worked with over the years are strong backers of Ukraine.
And nationalist often support democracy. That may not seem obvious today, but it has been true historically.
