for the life of me I can’t figure out how to save the game dude

It's easy. After you navigate by pressing Esc and "Save game" and then "New save", you just have to type after you select the "New save" option, the box isn't visible for filling in the name, but it's there. You just have to type and it will be named :)
But you can't save a game if you don't name it.
