You have to buy the rich peasants upgrade as soon as you can, later stages are impossible without it.
Very easy once you get that and a couple other skills like the ice wall for the wizards and the dwarven engineering buff.
ok no that was not the problem apparently is because i had an old save so because of that i only had the base boy and no shop making impossible but deleting the save and creating a new one worked
