The connection to the theme is a bit more symbolic: we wanted to take something extremely ordinary – a rock – and reinvent it as a living character on an emotional journey. The core idea was to turn a mundane action like rolling and jumping into a metaphor for overcoming obstacles and rising from the bottom, inspired by the stages of depression and resilience.

That’s why the game is wordless, focusing on color progression, mood shifts, and environmental storytelling to reflect emotions:

  • Gray and muted tones at the bottom → denial, feeling stuck.

  • Red, chaotic zones → frustration and anger.

  • Green, labyrinth-like spaces → confusion and negotiation.

  • Deep blues → sadness and heaviness.

  • Warm, bright colors at the top → acceptance and hope.

In short, the theme for us was about reinventing something as simple as a rock and the act of moving upward into a narrative about growth and recovery.
