I appreciate I’m a bit late to the party but Carlito is a seriously good 3D platformer and I sincerely hope, for all of our sakes, the devs are still working on it!
I had an absolute blast playing it. As an avid 3D platformer player - I’ve played everything from the well known franchises to the obscure hidden gems. Carlito nails just about everything a 3D platformer has to nail:
1) Brilliant snappy movement and jumping. The base moveset is slick and clean and really gives you great mobility. There’s a shadow for jump aiming. A SICK wall grab and I LOVE the sort of mini run you do up a wall when you hit it, super super nice. A great spin (Crash esque), double jump, grapple hook and dive - all are seamless and perfect feeling. The unlock able moves are also awesome - really loved the sprint and the feeling of it and also the dive that could be interrupted with a 3rd jump. Just really really solid movement. Some of the best I’ve seen, really.
2) Cute NPCs - though there’s not many of them and this is just the 1 level - they are all super cool. I really liked the Sensei grandpa and the writing and personality’s shone through. Would really love to see their story fleshed out and more characters added. The enemy designs were also really nice. Really liked the Ninja Owls that sort of run like Samurais!
3) Brilliant colour palette and level design. A lovely colourful beach/island vibe with blocky designs. Huts, waterfalls and rivers - really reminiscent of the N64/PSX kind of adventure games. All the platforms felt perfectly placed which lends very well to parkouring around the island. You can get in a great rhythm.
4) And then tons of extras. I absolutely loved the hidden cheat codes - such a throwback to the early platformers. I digger the Rayman inspired outfit with floating limbs - very cool stuff. I also digged little features like the water splashing the camera when you when underwater. Really neat stuff that shows a hell of a lot of passion and charm.
Geniunely one of my fondest experiences on Itch and just an amazingly solid concept for the genre. I really hope you are proud of this and are cooking something excellent up for us all!
Thanks Aurelien and team!
