I want to congratulate you on managing to impeccably weave lovecraftian tremendum in religious narrative and would like to refer you to the novella Lazarus (Eleazar), by Leonid Andreyev, which is dedicated to the Gospel account of Lazarus, the brother of Jesus' friends Mary and Martha, who died after a short illness... Before the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, Christ raised Lazarus from the dead after a four-day stay in the grave. According to the church, Lazarus was ordained by the apostle Paul and was the first bishop of Cyprus and it's also interesting that tradition mentions that Lazarus did not laugh after his miraculous resurrection... Andreyev uses this story as a basis for his own, but after peering beyond the veil, Lazarus is no longer the same, his face is cracked and beginning to rot, and his gaze, for all beings bathed in the sun, becomes like Medusa's sting. Lazarus, as a living testimony of God's mercy, is paraded through the Roman Empire, but instead of fascination and religious ecstasy, the encounter with the resurrected in people causes chills and existential horror. Since the motifs are similar and playing your VN irresistibly reminded me of the aforementioned short story, I coldly recommend it to you ;-* Keep on spinning!
