Five Stars for this Debut Gem!
The Worst Summer of My Life by Michelle Heller is a bold-faced lie. It flies in the face of the time honored addage that your first book is always your worst. If this is Heller at her worst, I cannot begin to comprehand what's coming. With the skill of a far more well-known author, she weaves a thrilling narrative steeped in excitement, mystery, and more than a few outright laughs.
I won't give away the story, but it moves at a brisk pace and keeps the reader guessing as things get progressively worse for all involved. The heroine of our story, a poor thiry-something woman who suffers with the wrong name tag for almost half the tale, is deeply fleshed out and richly human. It's hard not to feel for her as the end gets nigh, or when she has to hold a ragtag group of teens together in the face of the unspeakable.
But, somehow she does, just like the woman who wrote the book.
I don't say this often, but I will repeat it for those who just skimmed to the end: You need a little Weinervana in your life, and you need to write down the name Michelle Heller, because this author is going places and you aren't going to want to miss *any* of it.
