Pretty much whenever, as long as it's before the choice that determines the ending! Best time to use them would probably be right after finding them. 

Yeah, that's fair. 
I'd originally intended to include something like that, but I'd run out of steam with this project before I got around to it. It'll be a higher priority in my future projects though!
