Talk to Vadir, the Dwarf at the tavern and he will mention a city. Head outside earlyish in the morning and you can take a trip with him that will unlock the desert.

What exactly are you supposed to do? He doesn't have any further dialogue options for me, and I don't see any merchant trips in the morning.
edit: You need to talk to Dulrig first about the city, before it becomes an option for Vadir.
