Well, the upgrades that you can win by leveling up or buying with the sand in the tech tree should help with surviving longer. But they are poorly balanced, and the 'tech tree' on the main menu seems to be a mystery. And I believe that if you fill the sand jars, they'll tip over and throw sand everywhere, but I'm not sure.
