It does that sometimes and we still don’t know why yet, as it never happened to us when we tested both on Windows and OSX. As this happens quite often enough, in the future we will move away from putting the game savedata inside the game’s folder and perhaps put it in the system folder instead.
For now, there is no way to recover the files or a way to skip the first coliseum battle.
