Shoot 'em ups (Shmups) were very popular in the 80s and 90s. I think of Gradius, R-Type, or Ikaruga. Today, they are more of a niche genre.
Still, they have a timeless appeal: the fast-paced action, the precise gameplay, and the feeling of getting better with every run – until you finally defeat the boss that once seemed unbeatable.
