Question before I buy, is this something that can be read without the context of genshin impact?

I would say so. A light read through some wiki articles may be all you need for any missing context, but this piece was made long before a lot of the plot of Genshin was released. It has its own plot and ending seperate to the game, so I think it would still be a good read regardless.
