If you are interested, there is a lot of information across the internet on Operation Causeway.  This was a US plan to invade Taiwan in WWII that was ultimately canceled.  Backers of the plan wanted to help China by using Taiwan as a base to interdict Japanese shipping to occupied Chinese costal cities.  An invasion would have required too many troops, so the US opted to invade Okinawa instead.  The Okinawa operation involved 250,000 Allied combat troops and 12 aircraft carriers.  US planners estimated that Taiwan would have required more than 500,000 combat troops.
