I'm sorry to hear the controls were confusing. The general flow is to press the number key to select which tool is active, then press Space or Enter to use the selected tool on the current tile. For movement, this causes you to grab the tile, then you need to press left or right to choose which direction to move it. You should hear a kind of riffling sound when you grab the tile, and a stone sliding sound when the tile moves.
It's definitely not the most intuitive controls, but I hope this helps!
