Holding the spacebar does register a good hit, but it doesn't maintain your combo which is what actually gives you hype points and stops the hype from going down.
If you get a chance to play again, I'd recommend trying to hit the post it note combo if you can, and also check out the environment for some hidden stuff to unlock! We realize its a little obtuse finding your way there, we're working on updating our itch description to include some more explicit instruction!
