We have checked the game builds again for the section you mentioned about the game. This error message issue occurs if you don't follow the download instructions given in the download page as in to extract the zip file with 7-zip software. Windows zip functionality is unable to extract all assets of the game.
There are a total of 5 main choices in the game along 3 additional choices at the end of each 5 main choices.
You are correct it is not a novel, it is visual novel.
This game is in prototype stage. So bugs will be there.
