Ignore completely the stearing wheel and just get used to the gearing. You don't need the car to get to the top speed of the gear to be able to change, so just click the accelerator before changing gears after the third. You need to save as much time as possible to spend everything in the last gear and if a rock hits you, just do it again and again and if something changes just keep accelerating no matter what
