I have a few questions. Is there a reliable tutorial for programs like GIMP?  I don't know how to properly use it and it bothers me. Another question, how do I make my character do actions like opening their mouth as if they are talking, show different emotions, etc.? Do I need photoshop instead of GIMP or am I dumb?

I think the software doesn't matter much as long as it can open the PSD or CSP file. If you don't like GIMP, there are some cool free drawing softwares like Krita, Medibang, and FireAlpaca. I believe all of these can open the files.

Just need to show and hide the folder with the design variation you'd like to use and save it as a PNG.

I will explain from macro to micro. My organization works as follows:

  1. There are folders with categories of body parts, such as head; feminine body; and male body.
  2. In these folders there are other folders with more specific categories. For example, inside the head folder there is the mouth folder.
  3. Within these folders there are folders with the variations of that particular item. For example, inside the mouth folder, there are folders with mouth types. Serious closed mouth; happy closed mouth; mouth open in A; mouth open in O. You choose the one you want, leave it exposed, hide the others. and save it in PNG.
  4. Inside these folders with item variations are layers of that item. I usually do 1 line layer (L), 1 color layer (C), and 1 shadow layer (FX), depending on the need (A closed mouth only needs one line layer). On this color layer, you can paint the drawing in another color. Some folders have texture layers (T) with some more personalized designs for you to use if you want.
