Nice and minimalistic, with a slight retro style. The Youmu is really cute.
But. My sibling in [insert Shinto god here], your game's frame rate is uncapped. The game becomes impossible with my monitor on 144 Hz mode. (Nonsensical spirit despawning, the spirits fire double as fast than normal)
(Don't worry, I still cleared the game with my monitor on 60 Hz)
I want to parry those attacks so badly. Really make those enemies understand that the things that cannot be cut by my Roukanken, forged by youkai, are close to none. But I understand. Making a game in 1989 must have been tough. Technology like that probably did not exist at that time.
Besides the gameplay, the sprites and music are top-notch!! If I would be you, I would fear this kind of power. It can be used for so much - what if you make another awesome game about Youmu? Society would collapse trying to decide which game to play! God forbid you release it on the (upcoming) Nintendo Entertainment System!!!
All in all, I am glad to see this be archived for society to collectively go “huh neat”.
i rate the game whatwasmyonrunningfrom/10
Thank you for making a game with Youmu! Youmu is green! Like the theme! There needs to be more Youmu games!!!
I love the simple visuals and the music is just perfect how it builds as you get further into the level (Is there a way to listen to the song outside the game?) Honestly you captured such hype from catching up to the ghost half it's unbelievable! I think the impact of the music swelling as you progress can only be that hype because the game is hard.
The game is really hard. Timing both jump and slashes have to be perfect. The sections with both air and ground enemies feel impossible to dodge so I just had to take the hits which didn't feel so good. Wish there was a restart button because getting hit at the wrong time ends the run.
Learning the rhythm and slowly pushing through is fun and I like the simple gameplay of just jump and slash. However I couldn't beat the game even though I wanted to... I'm sorry. (I made it to where Youmu starts overtaking the ghost.)
I tried to include a bit of Castlevania 1 into the game.
Can you describe "intended tech"?
Oh, I see.
There is no other mechanic. Only jumping and slashing.
Took me a few attempts but I got it in the end, Great use of theme. Very minor frustrations upon falling onto bullets which spawned after I jumped but that was made up far more from the satisfaction of finishing the game.
