A fun story! I really liked the art.

English

Should I be writing feedback for this one in English or Spanish? I guess I’ll do both.

Writing: I played it in Spanish first and then in English (I was born in Denmark, but went to school in Spain). I feel like the Spanish version was slightly more polished than the English one, although some onomatopoeia were in English in the Spanish version (“phew” and “Yaaawwwwnn”). In European Spanish I’d probably have written “¡Uf!” and “(Bosteza)”. But Latin American Spanish isn’t identical to European Spanish, so perhaps those who live near English-speaking places borrow some onomatopoeia from English just like they refer to a computer mouse as “mouse”. (Also, they would probably have said “luego” where I said “después” and “escuela” where I said “colegio” in the Spanish version of this paragraph.)

As for the English version, I think there might be a few typos and a few grammar issues. I could probably proofread the whole thing if you want, but English is my third language, so maybe a native speaker could do better.

By the way I don’t really mind the word “Vestigio” being in Spanish in the English version, but I think calling the grandfather “Maestro” in one sentence and “master” in the next one was a bit odd. I think I’d go with the English word “master”, because “Maestro” in English might get understood to mean a conductor.

I am bilingual and bicultural (I spoke Danish at home and Spanish in school) but I personally don’t do language mixing (or code switching, as linguists would call it). If I mention my grandma’s name while speaking Spanish I do pronounce it in Danish, but I wouldn’t call her “mormor” while speaking in Spanish (“mormor” means mom’s mom in Danish).

Theme: Those characters are both spooky, scary and supernatural, and the story takes place during a Halloween celebration. So I think it fits the theme pretty well.

Audio: The music fits the story and I think it also fits the environment it takes place in. I haven’t listened to much Hispanic American music lately (especially the one that isn’t “too modern”), but it does remind me of someone from over there that I haven’t seen since I moved back to Denmark. I guess it also reminds me a bit of Spain, now that I think about it. And I think it sounds good. (Maybe some parts more than others, but I do like it.)

I also like the sound effects.

Art: I think the sprites are one style, maybe a more modern style (maybe a bit anime-influenced), and the style of the backgrounds looks more traditional and Hispanic-American. I mean, I think you probably did use some modern tools to make those straight lines where the line thickness changes very uniformly, but I think it looks really good and fits the story.

And the UI looks like a default Ren’Py UI where you picked and maybe edited the colours. Yeah, that at least looks better than making a more custom but less polished UI.

Fun: It was fun to try different options and see what they did. And it was also fun to be able to check out a VN in Spanish from this jam.

¿Escribo los comentarios para este juego en inglés o en español? Creo que haré ambas cosas.

Escritura: Lo jugué primero en Español y después en inglés (nací en Dinamarca pero fui al colegio en España). Creo que la versión española estaba un poco más pulida que la inglesa, aunque había onomatopeyas en inglés en la española (“Phew” y “Yaaawwwwnn”). En español de España (o castellano como a veces lo llaman ahí), probablemente diría “¡Uf!” or “(Bosteza)”. Pero el español latino no es idéntico al castellano. Tal vez los que viven cerca de sitios donde se habla inglés prestan onomatopeyas del inglés igual que al ratón del ordenador lo llaman “mouse”. (Y probablemente dirían “luego” donde yo dije “después” y “escuela” donde dije “colegio” en este párrafo.)

En cuanto a la versión inglesa, creo que había algunas erratas y errores gramaticales. Tal vez yo podría revisar todo el texto si queréis, pero el inglés es mi tercera lengua, así que quizás un hablante nativo podría hacerlo mejor.

Por cierto, no me importa que “Vestigio” sale en español en la versión inglesa, pero me extrañó un poco que en una frase llaman “Maestro” al abuelo y en la siguiente lo llaman “master”. Creo que en inglés prefiero la palabra inglesa, porque “Maestro” en inglés se podría entender como director de orquesta (o de coro).

Tema: Esos personajes son tanto espeluznantes como aterradores y sobrenaturales; y la historia tiene lugar durante la celebración de Halloween. Así que creo que se ajusta bien al tema.

Sonido La música va bien con la historia y me parece que también va bien con el lugar donde está situada. Últimamente no escucho mucha música hispanoamericana (y menos si no cuento la que es “demasiado moderna”), pero me recuerda a alguien de allá que no he visto desde que me volví a mudar a Dinamarca. Creo que también me recuerda un poco a España, ahora que lo pienso. I me parece que suena bien. (Quizá algunas partes suenen mejor que otras. Pero me gusta).

También me gustan los efectos sonoros.

Arte: Creo que los personajes están pintados en un estilo, quizá más moderno (y tal vez con influencia de animaciones japonesas), y os fondos parecen tener un estilo más tradicional e hispanoamericano. A ver, creo que probablemente hayáis usado herramientas modernas para hacer esas líneas rectas cuyo grosor cambia tan uniformemente, pero creo que queda bien y va bien con la historia.

Y la interfaz se parece a la que Ren’Py usa por defecto, seleccionando y quizás editando los colores. Bien, eso queda mejor que hacer una interfaz propia menos pulida.

Diversión: Fue entretenido probar las distintas opciones y ver qué pasaba. Y también era entretenido poder probar una novela visual en español en esta jam.

Hello! First of all, thanks for this in-depth review, we really appreciate you took the time and effort to play our game multiple times and give us some feedback!

I think the translation part needs some clarification.

Translation issues were something we saw coming. This was our first long Jam and we faced lots of issues regarding time-management. We did the game in Spanish first, as you may have noticed, and we left little to no time for translation and proof-reading, so we were expecting major mistakes. Still, we took the risk because we wanted more people to be able to enjoy the game. Onomatopoeias were 100% my bad since it was my first time trying to fit them into narrative.

All this is something we will definitely take into consideration for the future games we might attempt.

When our schedules become a little lighter, a cleaner translation will be a priority since we're very proud of this game and we definitely want to polish it! Again thanks a lot for the review!!

Very good game, congratulations to the team. A perfect story to play on Halloween. Alba's art and the Vestiges are nicely done along with the music and designs in general.
