Neat mechanic, controls feel a bit weird and unconventional currently but interested in seeing how you'll iterate on it!

Since the camera is locked and youre looking at a side view i feel a & d for controls would be more logical

nice control system but maybe you can try to change the positions of things to make it more confusing? or maybe you can add more characters that all have different obstacles but the same movement.
