Hey all and welcome to the first ever HawkesJam! This jam is in celebration of hitting 5000 subscribers on my channel @HawkesByte, but all are welcome regardless of if you came from YouTube or just stumbled upon the jam some other way!
This Jam is completely beginner friendly! The final votes will be done by the judges, so if your game is full of "programmer art" then don't worry, we are looking purely for originality and enjoyability :) Of course that's not to say don't add cool art and graphics if that's your thing! If someone drops a graphical masterpiece on me then chances are I'll give you a few bonus points ;)
Working in groups is also totally cool and encouraged! You can join the discord to find a group or just search for some here on itch.io! That said the groups have a max capacity of 3 people! Any more than that and the game will not be eligible to receive an award or win the jam.
There will be a theme but feel free to take that theme in any weird or unexpected ways you wish! I love to see creative approaches to a challenge and hope to play all sort's of games like a 2D platformer, FPS, Horror, Story, Roguelike, Puzzle, Adventure, etc! There are no limits to how you can take the theme :)
Hey everyone! You’re here for the theme reveal, I’m sure. I imagine many of you, especially if you’ve been subscribed to the channel for a while, were expecting “Sheep” or something along those lines. But as many mentioned on the discord, that would have been a bit too on the nose. For that reason, this jam's theme was picked entirely at random and honestly on pretty short notice, but it will hopefully inspire you all into making some super cool games over the coming week!
Enough talk though, here’s the theme:
"Microscopic" Definitions -
"Magic" Definitions -
It's a bit of a weird one but we are open to any interpretation of the theme, whether you choose to have tiny little wizards battling it out against bacteria or your protagonist is just an awful witch who can barely cast a spell, the choice is totally up to you! Best of luck in the jam, we can't wait to see what you all make and thanks so much for getting involved!
The final "winners" will be chosen by myself and the judges (bar of course the community vote award), the voting system used here will only affect the order in which we play the games (unless this get's too many entries of course in which case it might affect the chances of the game being played but I doubt that will be the case).
There will be Three Awards!
Best Overall Game Award -
Community Choice Award -
Most Innovative Game Award -
Of course I will personally try to play every game and try to include them into the final video project, however depending on the size of the jam I cannot guarantee that!
Also if I can think of any other fun or cool little bonus rewards or prizes before the end date of the jam then of course I will be including those as well!!
- Probably the most important "rule" would be to please upload a Windows OS or WebGL build of the game! I won't be able to enjoy your awesome projects otherwise!
- The game must be made specifically for this event within the 1 week time frame, games that have been created before the start date will be disqualified (I will try my best to ensure this, of course if I make a bad call feel free to provide any evidence such as GitHub commit logs, etc!)
- You can use any assets as long as you have the permissions to use them, furthermore please don't include any copyrighted music! YouTube doesn't like that, so I won't be able to showcase the project in the video! All assets used that are not of your own original creation must be referenced within the description of the upload!
- Teams are welcome in the project however there is a maximum of 3 contributors to any one game! You can join the discord (linked below) to look for a group or do so here on itch.io :) Be sure to credit and include all contributors in the uploads description!
- Be original! Don't directly copy a game, no Minecraft remakes please! One of the voting criteria's will be "Originality" so keep that in mind!
- Absolutely no NSFW content beyond maybe a bit of gore (if you go down some horror game route)
- Stick to the theme! Obviously you can take the theme and mess with it in any which way you please but be sure that it is obvious and clear that you actually included it.
- Don't try and rig the votes by asking your friends to rate you 5 stars across the board! Or do.. I probably won't notice. The votes will likely only affect the order in which the games are played, they don't necessarily mean your game will win the jam or even make it into the video as that will be determined by myself and the other judges, so keep that in mind!
- By joining and uploading a project you agree to have your game recorded and uploaded to a YouTube video on the channel @HawkesByte! (I promise I wont be mean about your game, but I might make some suggestions!)
The Discord!
Here you can find groups or teammates for the project if that's of interest to you, or just mess around I really don't care!
