The jab serves multiple purposes: it increases combo, knocks back enemies, and gives the player an additional jump.
The smash deals significant damage and can allow the player to reach otherwise inaccessible heights.
Enemies can serve as a challenge to avoid or a chance at a combo.
There are green punch spheres that, when broken the first time, grant an additional jump and add to your combo, but do not award further combos beyond the first hit. This encourages the player to continue moving to continue the combo.
The combo mechanic also provides the player the opportunity to move quickly to escape the red death that slowly chases the player, preventing the player from simply standing there and lining up every jump.
