The first thing I did for Blend was a very simple animation of pixels moving around a circle. Several of these orbit around the player in varying colours and sizes, which were ultimately used to indicate progression through the game.

I added items for the player to collect and wanted a sound to play for each one. I recorded some guitar sounds and had them play randomly for each pickup. For each stage of the game, the player gains a new orbiting colour and 'learns' new sounds for future pickups.
The pickups were going to be an animation originally, but I ended up using the individual frames as a random image for each one.

Because there are no boundaries to stop the player from wandering endlessly, I added a timer that ticks down unless pickups are collected. This timer ticks down faster and faster with each new coloured stage.
