In all honesty I haven't finished the game (I got to the part where Ms. Salma wakes you up), Visual Novels are not my thing, so it can take me a while to work through them; however I know there's only one day left and wanted to make sure I had a chance to comment before the rating period ends.
I have 2 minor complaints. I found the text somewhat difficult to read, I do like that it is unique and fits the overall style well, and it's likely more my problem than yours. Also, is Y/N supposed to be "Your Name"? If so I'd suggest just adding a prompt for the player to enter the name they want to use, as seeing Y/N felt distracting to me. Again, that's more likely a me problem, as I'm guessing the audience for this style of game is probably more amicable to it than I am.
Other than that, I thought the art was very well done, the characters seem interesting and varied, and I like that there's a little mystery sprinkled in. I plan on picking it back up soon, just not sure I'll be able to finish it before the jam.
Got off work early and was able to finish the game! I got the good ending. Honestly, I'm a little disappointed that the mystery wasn't explored in more detail, but I assume you all are making more games in the series that will expand on it.
I did run across one spot that was confusing to me. When Aku wakes up on the last day, there's a weird jump between waking up in bed and then waking up when they reach their destination. I saw your note that the web version is glitchy, so not sure if it just skipped some lines, or what, but I dug back through the history and couldn't find any sort of connection between the two... I should've taken a screen shot, but in case it's helpful it went something like (Aku wakes, starts pondering the vacation, realizes they need to check the rental car, * gets woken up as they arrive to the picnic). * = Where I got lost.
Definitely seems like you're doing a great job of sprinkling bread crumbs and lore throughout while developing the characters. I could definitely see this growing into a series that readers get really attached to! Oh, and one last note, that onde-onde looked amazing, wish I could get some around here!
this is a really cute and fun game! i really enjoyed the more wholesome anti-capitalist perspective :)
Thank you so much for playing! Glad you enjoyed the message! -Hon
Cute Game.
It's a really cute and well-made game! I played through it three times, and unless there is another, secret ending (which there might be?) I think I got them all. I enjoyed it a lot, the writing and art was really good, and the interactions felt meaningful.
I guess my only criticism would be, that it only very tangentially relates to the jam, there is a little bit that I discovered, but unless I missed something big, it's more on the periphery. That doesn't change at all that this is an amazing visual novel.
Thank you so much for playing and even getting all the endings! (Yeah you got it all!)
I (@maho_anpu, one of the co-writers) tried to put as much as blatant anti-capitalist discourse/ideas as I can (I'm the social science student of the group lol) but I thought that this game could be a subversion that shows how anti-capitalist stories don't have to always be gut-wrenching and can we wholesome as well! We chose to focus on the "...awesome alternatives and/or day to day tricks to fight against rampant capitalism in creative ways." part of the jam's description :)
Personally I'm super interested to make a more blatant and super satirical anti-capitalism jam, so maybe next year! Thank you so much for your feedback!
