I'm playing. this right now! Question: when it says put the cards atop one another, am I building a stack of cars in the shape of a +, or am I building a ladder of cards that extends some distance like -I-I-I-I-I-I-I?

Regarding the layout, I hadn't thought about it till now but you can either stack the cards atop one another, or lay them out horizontally in the way you suggested (I-I-I-). Laying them out horizontally is probably a better option as it will spare players from having a tower of cards topple over π
