I loved Virtua Cop, and this is a great demake!
A really endearing effort, soured massively by unfair level design.
I really like the idea of turning RE4 into a classic linear 2D action platformer, and I LOVE the work done on the pixel art and music. It all feels and looks very authentic to both the NES and the original RE4 at the same time.
As for gameplay, the moving and shooting are good, the gamefeel of stuff like enemy attacks and jumping are on point, but the game is EXTREMELY frustrating because of some frankly baffling level design decisions.
It is one thing for a level to be challenging in a fair way, and another thing entirely for it to keep throwing stuff at you too fast for you to be able to react. The way the game constantly spams enemies makes it very hard to make a quick decision in time, and it's even harder when it keeps infinitely spawning those weak ladies with knives, so you have to deal with them while thinking about how to approach the more tricky sections, and it just feels like a mess.
What really soured my mood, however, was the chainsaw boss. If it wasn't bad enough that he's a damage sponge of annoying proportions, his entire chainsaw serves as a shield, meaning you either gotta hit his head or his back. It also doesn't help that, if you jump behind him and he turns around, his chainsaw hitbox IMMEDIATELY turns around with him, leading to you taking a cheap hit.
It baffles me too, because the pixel art is so well made. The devs really couldn't have just made a turning around animation for the chainsaw guy?
All in all, a solid effort, but much too frustrating to recommend.
