Theme
We directly addressed overfishing in oceans through our game. We wanted to show the negative effects of overfishing in a story that features a young restaurant owner named Chip. She wants to compete with the neighboring chain restaurant and is pressured by rent payments from her landlord. However, she does not realize that her methods of running the restaurant are contributing to overfishing. In the end, Chip learns that her current ways are damaging the ocean’s ecosystem and will change her ways.

Jam Judge
  • Super humorous dialog that made me want to keep the story moving, the tone really showed character even with limited writing
  • Lovely pixel art style
  • I got a real sense of homey coastal setting with the restaurant wars going on, a really good vehicle for talking about sustainable fishing practices
  • The ending was abrupt, but funny, left me with an lol and a smile on my face!

Cool little game! I like the art, characters and that you wove the environmental issue into a little story.

The game stopped 3 or 4 levels in, I'm not entirely sure if it was the end or if it was caused by a bug. I think it could have benefited from a little more developed fishing tools on further levels and that the overfishing somehow became visible in the mechanics, but I know time is ofc limited during the game jam.

Great job either way, love the art!

Thanks! The game ending at the point you describe was intentional in terms of story, but nothing further than that was implemented due to time constraints so it just freezes rather than resetting. It's a similar story with the fishing tools—the intent was to incorporate increasingly invasive fishing methods, but nothing beyond the spear was completed!

Yeah, and I completely understand! It's a great start, I think the story and setting work and the art is nice. Great job!
