How does you game fit the theme?
If you fear something, it becomes real. If you're brave enough, it will not. The enemies have a Level of Fear, which makes that only the nightmares that are powerful enough will scare them and turn them into a real thing that makes them take damage, but if they do not fear enough, they won't receive damage because they won't take it as real.
