Enchanted Axolotl

I'm working on a mostly cozy campaign setting, which will be primarily general. That is, it should work with 5e, cairn, wand and wizardry, etc.

I'm including a little below the images

This joyous little forest villages overflow with spirits and fey, while ancient gods play among the trees.

Questolotl is a Whimsical Fantasy world. A world of  lighthearted and often funny villages, mixed with serious quests against over the top villains. There are a kaleidoscope of locations and ideas within these realms, for here every little nook holds stories and secrets, and each quest brings the Quester one step closer to understanding themselves and the magical realms they inhabit, and to the realization that both are so huge they’ll never fully grasp either.

All the Hollows within this land, whether floating lakes or deep within the bowels of the earth are connected by a vast living forest that has moods and personalities all its own. Through the pathways within this forest one might walk a mile but travel a thousand, or walk a thousand to travel one.

As a Quester, you are as interested in getting to know the strange forest beyond these paths as much as the paths themselves. For both can carry you to interesting new Hollows, and help you get to know yourself, the world around you, and the divine.

Dangers and Shadows

There is joy in the hearts of the axolotlkin, but also an occasional fear, for there are shadows that move about this world. There are some ancient spirits who awake, hungry as a fluffy bear after a long winter and encounters with them can go awry.

More than this ancient ruins have pushed their way into this forest, spreading corruption like spores over a field. Sorrowful, greedy and angry spirits now rove the woodland where spots of blight fester.

As Questers, chosen by the forest itself, it is our duty to help quiet these feral spirits, to return peace, to bring hope, and to heal the corruption within the forest, via spell and blade if need be. It is for us that this world was named. As it is we who quest maintain the world.

To help achieve your goals this you can:

Befriend the beings of the forest

You can attend the parties of fairies, invite primordial deities over for tea, or otherwise seek to form bonds with the creatures of the forest so that you have allies who can aid you when you need it.

Awaken and empower positive forces in the forest

You can gather the magical energy necessary to awaken and empower the powers of the forest which will aid in your task.

Battle Dangerous Powers

As with more traditional Roleplaying Games you can battle dangerous beings that are corrupting the forest, halting the damage they are doing and allowing this damage to be healed.

The Living Forest

The forest loves to play, it will blow little winds to steal hats so that it can play chase, or else it might sometimes shift plants about for some joke.

“The Forest” is a living, sprawling woodland so ancient the stars have shifted since it began gazing upon them.

The forest is a mercurial place of ever shifting moods, and one can often feel this mood as a presence all around them. Those here sense that there is a an intelligence within the timberlands far greater than their own. This presence always evokes awe, an awareness of how tiny one is as compared to the vastness of the wilderness.

If you're unsure of The Forest's mood during your adventure, roll a d20:

  1. 1. Welcoming: The forest is seeking for company and so will encourage people to explore, making itself more vibrant and brighter, allowing more sun or moonlight to filter through the trees and providing people with a feeling of security so they are more likely to stop to eat and talk so it can listen in.
  2. 2. Curious: The forest subtly watches and learns about its travelers, sometimes testing them with shifts in the path, the odd actions of animals, and so forth, so it can see how they react.
  3. 3. Playful: Breezes, animals, and the plants themselves seem to become mischievous as the forest seeks to get people to play with it.
  4. 4. Joyous: The forest sings with life and everything appears more radiant. The animals gamble and play about to the amusement of those watching.
  5. 5. Reflective: The forest seems to be pondering time, as it shows ancient ruins and ghostly memories, sometimes even illusionary memories, of bygone eras. Of animals, of fairies, of people who once made their homes within it but no longer exist.
  6. 6. Gentle: The forest is calm and nurturing, filled with delicious berries, mushrooms, and clean streams of water. This is a good time to sit, ponder, and take a nap for the forest is watching.
  7. 7. Helpful: The forest shows travelers herbs and whispers thoughts in their ears.
  8. 8.
  9. 9. Restless: The forest shifts and changes, rearranging paths, rustling leaves, and teasing visitors with sudden surprises.
  10. 10.
  11. 11. Inspirational: The forest alters itself to inspire those passing through to create songs, poems, art, etc.
  12. 12. Sharing: The forest will shift the plants to reveal its wonders. Hidden waterfalls and little nooks, or sometimes even magical items that have been left behind.
  13. 13. Drowsy: The forest feels like it’s drifting off to sleep. It can grow upset if there are loud noises that disturb its rest.
  14. 14. Cheeky: The forest plays harmless tricks—echoes that mimic voices, paths that lead in playful circles, or squirrels that drop acorns on heads.
  15. 15. Sorrowful: The forest is sad and droopy, with some of its vibrancy missing.
  16. 16. Pensive: The forest feels heavy with thought, its stillness creating a contemplative mood.
  17. 17. Eerie: The forest gives off as sense of being haunted, and will cause startling moments.
  18. Upset: Leaves bristle and storms often roll in.
  19. Innovative – The forest might seek to experiment and so create new forms of life, plants, animals, and odder creatures.
  20. Cultivate – The forest might be seeking to cultivate and encourage magic users to enter it in the future and so may provide them with motes of magic, magical knowledge through discovery, etc. After all, it also feeds upon the magic created by people.
