What is Historically Accurate Game Jam (HAGJ)?

Credit: Sam Scribbler

Historically Accurate Game Jam is a friendly video game-making competition that takes place twice a year. The theme for each jam is chosen by the community (For more details, see “How is the game jam theme chosen?”. This theme must be incorporated into the game-making process. The jam is virtual, taking place completely online via itch.io and Discord since 2019.

During the competition, participants form groups and work together to create a video game inspired by real historical events, using the jam theme as the focal point of their research. There are various things to consider when making your game.

When the competition is over, entries are rated by the participants. Anyone who has submitted a game can vote, as long as they are credited properly on the entry page of their game. Everyone’s vote has the same weight. Winners will be announced when the voting period is over, and the team placing #1 in the Overall category will receive bragging rights, special server roles, and Steam Keys from the HAGJ’s sponsors.

Each instance of HAGJ has its own jam page on itch.io, where updates will be posted before, during, and after the jam. The jam also has an official itch.io page, where you can find the jam wiki, jam page links, and other info.
