My first week at learning Game dev & Godot

Hi everyone,

First before telling about what you are probably for, quick introduction. I’m Diamant, from France, I’m 21, 22 in a few weeks, and I am (or was) a hobbyist web developer in typescript and svelte who wanted for so long to learn video games dev but I felt like I wasn’t ready for it. (Even if I had make a video game in the past for a friend’s gamejam 3 years ago but it was written in blank vanilla javascript without any game engine)

So, introduction done, let’s go.

Something something… I started to learn.

I’ve decided to start with a bundle on HumbleBundle about learning game developments with godot and for the week, each days, I’ve followed 1 or 2 courses on what I’ve access on and follow step by step the process. I haven’t got so much trouble the first time I’ve opened Godot (godot 4 btw), I’ve already coded a lot on typescript, learning how to use documentations with the hell of the discord.js documentation and have a bit amount of knowledge on Python that helped me on learning the fundamentals of GDScript. I’m struggling a lot of finding the good node I want and I’m not an expert already on a week, I’ve like basics fundamentals of the developments but nothing on game design, on making 3D thing with blunder or whatever but I’m enjoying a lot learning and doing stuff.

After a few courses, since yesterday (12th October), I’ve decided to take a shot to make a small video game. The goal is simple: 2 platforms, you choose one, and you’ve a 50/50 chance to win.

I’ve spent my entire day so to do the basics prototype and I’ve successfully done it.

I’ve also integrated a script when you can choose the number of platform and the scene will be in charge on doing everything to have the good number of platforms and have the “standing platform” (the platform where the player is at the start) good enough to be enough long to have access to all of the platforms.

My long terms goal with this projects is to have something simple but when I can add my knowledges in the long terms. If you’ve read the title of the window in the gif, you might see than I want to add a roguelike aspect of the game, like having some characters who affect the gameplay (such as a “Rock paper scissors” man who like you’ll start with 3 platforms, with a win, a draw/retry and a loose one) or even bonuses than player can have (like you’ll have 1 more platform to choose from but your score multiplier is up by 50%)

And my long terms goal of learning Godot and game development is to, if I enjoy it, became a true game developer and just have fun by delivering fun to others.

Also, my goal with this post and the next posts is to like, for me, having a way to save my progress written somewhere and maybe have a few tips or feedbacks or help or support over my journey, and for you, a way to follow someone on her learning journey.

💜
