For my research topic I chose housing insecurity as I have been personally impacted by it. It also is a vastly growing issue among those of college age which is where I decided to focus my research. I decided to look into journals speaking about the impacts of the issues and focused my research between the years of 2018 and 2023 in order to keep any information based on the current housing market. I then investigated the issues of discrimination based on age in housing and some of the biases landlords have towards college students. This revealed an overwhelming issue with older landowners not renting to students due to worries of property values being affected based on information that is aggressively one sided and outdated. Such as the belief all college students are party animals or are aggressive and noisy in nature.
When I started thinking about these concepts as a game I wanted to base them on my experiences with looking for and maintaining housing as an mechanic. This is where I started to focus on papers please as a parody of the system and the fact that it feels like trying to get passed the guard in that game when attempting to find housing. Because of this I took the information and document bases of that game and instead flipped it as you are trying to get passed the landlord's application process. I then wanted to highlight the struggle of maintaining a house in a community that struggles with you being there as a student. This is why I theorized using the same mechanics but as dialogue options for the second part of the game.
The final step to turn this into a game idea while making sure the message doesn't get muddled is creating varying health conditions. because of this I though about feeling tired, pressured, or sad while being kicked out of a house and trying to focus on applying to other places and how my different attitudes effected the way and rate I would apply. I figured since our player character doesn't show the rest of their life in the game having these randomly pop up in order to give more narrative to the character.
