Senior Thesis, Journal Entry #2: Raw Technicalities

So to begin, Cocos-X is out. The company behind it is Chinese and has no section on data sharing so my older brother said I shouldn't go with it. I believe him, and I also don't have an Tik-Tok for that same reason.

My next choice was game maker, but it had this annoying propensity to open an new tab in Safari every couple of minutes, I ended having to use another program called Funter to find any leftover folders from game maker after deleting it, because even then it was still opening new tabs. I also don't recommend Opera in general, they're the company that runs it and they don't seem to be trustworthy.

Decker's still on the plate and there's always GBStudio. I'll probably have to choose Decker at this point. Another option is Solar2D https://solar2d.com/#. Solar's website has direct links to its forums which seem to be active. Though if it's similar to P5.JS (and it certainly seems like it), then who knows how long it will take for someone to answer.

Here's a demo page of Solar: https://playground.solar2d.com/, it's using something called Lua, but I'll probably want to call in Javascript if I can. If I end top using javascript the project will need to be toned down significantly since coding for real (and mostly on my own), isn't my strong suit just yet. Decker might suit a project larger in scope as it scripting language's called Lil, which I'll still need to learn, but maybe not as much as I would Java. It was pretty hard last time. If I did end up using Decker, it would be great to use Aseprite and Beepbox with it. But what's pretty clear overall is I'll have to shift my focus a bit to something simple, though I worry its final project won't be taken very seriously.

I do like Decker however, quite a lot (especially now that I know these other programs either won't work, or are beyond my means). Aesprite exports in simple png or whatever format you'd want. So in theory, if Decker can accept those files (and like in GBStudio), matches its very specific color gradient there wouldn't be an issue. Although it might have those tools built in already, it really seems like an all-in-one platform for web pages. Also, Beepbox is a free music maker I found on Itch last Spring in Intro into Game Development.Using these tools together might suggest to someone looking at my portfolio that I'm atleast clever, if I don't know how to code.

---

--An update Decker will essentially Decker-ize images making them compatible no matter what they look like, even true to life images, or real photographs uploaded to the web. It's pretty intuitive, just incredible. I could make my sprite however I want, and Decker will work its magic. Hallelujah.

It seems like a really easy program. Here's the overview for its scripting language, called Lil: http://beyondloom.com/decker/lil.html. Using its guided tour works pretty well, as well. I like Decker.

I should say the program is very cute, it operates like a real Mac interface. Whoever made it is going somewhere, no doubt about it. I guess I'll have to choose Decker, though I think we could talk about Solar at least for a little bit professor. You may know something I don't.

Some Potential Drawbacks to Decker:

-I have yet to see a way to import audio files.

-This will be an interactive storytelling tool more than anything. I can still put my mark, my personality on it, but it just won't be the same as a top-down graphically heavy project. like in Solar or even GBStudio. Even so I may not be ready for that yet, but even so, I want to try, but even so I'm afraid to. Now I know why developers devote the first year or so to deciding what they'll do in the first place. This stuff takes time, I just have to keep saying it.

Some Final Thoughts:

I found a cool tool in Itch here: https://nightmare-82.itch.io/rpg-tools, it has the graphical fidelity in and around Fallout 1 and 2, but sadly is windows only. My older brother's getting me a cool mini pc that can capably play modern games but sadly that will happen when I graduate. I think Decker is a solid bet, I'll need to decide if true to life images or handmade pixel art is the direction I can go. Perhaps there's an happy medium, using both, Burt that will require some brain power I've never used before. It takes a special eye to make things that don't look similar, look similar. In the past I went around this by simply making everything 'in house.' It gave it am more professional look, a cleaner look. But I'll cross that bridge, Decker checks most of the boxes all except for one, pretty big one--I wanted 2.5D.
