It's Friday Blog Post time!
Today, it's about something everyone knows.
Humans. However, there will be some surprises along the way.
In the year 2030; NASA, following the success of the first civilian colony on Mars, began work on the prototype FTL drive. Unfortunately, this work had to be stopped 5 years in as NASA was unable to get the funding needed to keep working on it. For 10 years after that, NASA struggled, and was permanently shuttered once the Second American Civil War (ACWII) began. The work that had been started on it was sent to the EU by an unknown person.
Looking over the work, the EU needed to secure funding to create it and work on the research, so the countries gained allies outside Europe, and founded what became the "Confederate Alliance of Nations" about 5 years after the ACWII began. A few years later, some of the UN member states that had been holding out joined the CAN, which made it a World power on the scientific and economic stage. Filling the gap that America had left.
In 2062, the CAN finally continues work on the FTL Drive, which would work by folding space in front of the ship.
In 2069; the first test flight happens. Humanity is no longer stuck on Earth.
3 years after that, the first human colony on Eden is formed. A year later, Eden joined the CAN, and the United Confederation of Systems is born.
The next 60 years are chaos and humans detect traces of other lifeforms in the universe.
Shortly following this, a human spacecraft Spacefolds into the middle of a battle between the Sen and the Regalian Technocracy. Through some clever, rapid diplomacy (Also made more amazing by the human inability to talk to them) prevents the ship from being destroyed.
After this point, Humanity is made a part of the galactic community.
Humans are different in that we have large amounts of variation in our lifetime pursuits. Which our society values greatly. This means that a human will have a couple of backgrounds that they went into. Also, as shown by the first contact, humans have extreme luck. Sometimes, things just go in their favor that probably shouldn't.
Other Aliens are well aware of this penchant, and both love it and fear it.
The human desire and cultural love for exploration has allowed us to be on quite a few worlds, even those that would be considered hostile to human life. This desire for "More" and "Better" does create some friction among other aliens who view humanity as "pushy." Occasionally, this will come out among factions, even the larger ones, though this isn't often a huge problem. A few aliens are impressed by the human drive to explore, however.
Human opinion of other alien species varies a lot. While racism has (mostly) faded away, there is a section of humans that are "speciest" against aliens. Larger factions rarely have this problem, but smaller groups of humans may unite against that perceived threat.
And some groups that you wouldn't expect don't have a problem with aliens at all. For example, Pirates. There are pirates of any species, and discrimination just increases the number of enemies you have.
Most Speciesm that you see is confined to the enemies of the faction they are a part of, though this may or may not be obvious, depending on the person.
(Author's note) Homophobia and transphobia have disappeared with the knowledge that anyone can change their sex for any reason with an overnight procedure and a small cybernetic that adjusts hormone levels. The transition is complete in 30 days. So, if you play a homophobic, transphobic, or racist character, you're going against the design and theme of the game.
And as always, if you like the flavor, please pick up a copy. We're currently part of the "Sci-fi is the Best" Bundle here on Itch. https://itch.io/b/1790/sci-fi-is-the-best
The game itself is located here. https://6sidedgames.itch.io/redshift
